Item Description

Sand Art
Ian Ross draws huge abstract patterns on the beach at low tide with a rake.
The tactile nature of the tool is quite similar to painting with a calligraphy
paintbrush. When the lunar cycle causes the largest tide swings, the ocean
pulls always from the earth and reveals a unique canvas, which is never the
same twice. Making work on this scale without creating any waste is a
motivating factor for Ross, raising awareness for climate change caused sea
level rise. Ross aims to accentuate the natural lines and beauty in each
composition that already exist on the earths surface, walking miles in a few
hours to draw these without a plan. He packs the trash out that he finds, and
the process is complete. Each work is an offering to that place, in that
moment, a gesture of gratitude.

Golden Gate Bridge Sand Art
I was on the bridge for its 50th anniversary in 1986, when its gentle curve bent
under the weight of 100,000 humans. I remember people throwing expensive
bicycles over the side because they could no longer hold them over their
heads in the depths of the crowd. I spend a lot of time under it, on a
surfboard, ebbing and flowing with the strongest current on the west coast of
our continent. I’ve heard it sing many times in 2023 when the wind aligns.
Drawing in the sand at low tide is always a unique experience that brings me
closer to places I love and cherish. Here, I offer you a new view of the most
photographed landmark on earth, that only lasted for a few hours.
International Orange will always hold a place in my heart, and will always be
my home.
