Artist Bio

Ramón José López is a renowned traditional artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico, dedicated to preserving and revitalizing Soanish colonial art forms. As the grandson of esteemed santero Lorenzo López, he carries forward a deep cultural and artistic heritage. His mastery spans retablos, bultos, reredos, silversmithing, and traditional woodworking, all crafted with meticulous attention to historical techniques.

Rooted in faith and tradition, Ramón hand-adzes local woods, prepares natural gesso, and uses authentic pigments to create pieces that honor the artistry of early New Mexican craftsmen. His work has been exhibited in the Albuquerque Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, and the New Mexico State Capitol. A passionate educator and mentor, he has shared his knowledge with apprentices and his own children, ensuring these time-honored traditions continue.
