Thirty-Six Views of the Golden Gate Bridge presents a series of photographs inspired by 19th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai who created Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, a series of woodblock prints that show the sacred mountain from various locations, in diï¬Âerent seasons, and in all kinds of weather. Nearly two hundred years later, Drooker endeavored to do the same with San Francisco’s defining landmark. He followed three self-imposed rules: make no postcard shots; make only black and white photos to emphasize the bridge’s fabled form; and photograph from unusual vantage points to place the bridge in context with its environment. “Viewers of these images,” writes essayist Gary Kamiya, “will not be able to see the world’s most beloved bridge in the same way again.”
