Now entering our tenth season, the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre (MPAC) has recently been rated as the 9th largest Theatre in Chicago by The League of Chicago Theatres. Metropolis joins the ranks of such nationally-acclaimed theatres as Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Cadillac Palace Theatre, Auditorium Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre, The Second City Theatre, Shubert Theater and Paramount Theater. Each year Metropolis: ? Serves over 76,000 ticket-buying patrons ? Reaches over 10,000 area employees through Corporate Programs ? Serves over 20,000 local school students through Educational Productions ? Serves over 12,000 students through Educational Programs ? Reaches over 1,200 teachers through Teacher Programs ? Reaches over 150 different schools through Educational Outreach Programs MPAC?s Professional Theatre: As MPAC?s ninth season comes to a close, preparations are well under way for the upcoming season. During the 2009-2010 season, which began in September 2009, MPAC presented more than 40 different shows/artists in 400 performances over 365 days, more than any other performing arts center in the Midwest. MPAC?s School of the Performing Arts: MPAC strives to be more than just an entertainment complex. Our goal is to be a multi-purpose community facility serving the diverse needs of the northwest suburbs. Another way we service the community is through our School of the Performing Arts. Since its inception in fall 2003, SOPA has nearly doubled in enrollment each year (with over 2,500 enrollments per year) and offers various specialized theatre classes to children and adults of all ages, focusing on building creativity, communication skills and self-esteem. For aspiring and established performers, MPAC?s classes further skills in multiple theatre disciplines, including acting, musical theatre and creative drama. During 2009, SOPA offered 100 drama classes, and after officially launching a music school for students of every experience level, provided approximately 800 instrumental and vocal lessons ranging in age from 6 months to 90-years of age. By developing programs to meet the needs of specific audiences from teens and seniors (in an award-winning program) to those with disabilities, SOPA has become a valued asset for the organization and community. Metropolis Outreach Programs: Below are just a few of the Outreach Programs offered through Metropolis School of the Performing Arts. In just two years, these programs have served over 12,000 participants in 50 different municipalities ? including Arlington Heights. Flourish in the Footlights: This year-long program provides young artists with special needs the same opportunities as other artists. The program covers acting techniques, improvisational training, character development, rehearsals and culminates with performances on the Metropolis main stage. Breaking Borders ? A cross cultural, creative drama exchange between two schools from completely different backgrounds ? one inner-city the other suburban. The children focus on creativity as common ground amidst diversity, distance, environment, race and religion. This year?s paired schools were Hibbard Elementary in Chicago and West Gate Elementary in Arlington Heights. Also Chavez Elementary in Chicago?s Back of the Yards and Parkview in Morton Grove. Imperative Narrative ? An intergenerational program that brings together senior citizens with young students to collaborate and share their stories and experiences. The 20-week class finishes with a performance on the Metropolis stage of the young artists taking what they?ve learned for the older mentors and translating it into various performance pieces from short stories and poems to skits and art work. Theater Not Gangs ? This program debuted this season in Chicago?s Sherman Park Park District. It?s an after school program in Englewood for teenagers 12-18 which allows participants to explore a variety of theater and performance styles which they then chose to make their own, develop and personalize. It finishes with a performance on Metropolis stage. Metropolis in Motion - Promotes dance, movement and health through creative and active in- and after-school programs. Students learn movement as expression, respect for their body and increased balance, agility, flexibility, rhythm, and strength. They?re taught basic dance in a variety of dance disciplines and then encouraged to adapt and evolve the dance into their own style. I-ACT Network ? A community of now 50 area educators meet every other month at Metropolis with actors and directors. They participate in workshops, seminars, classes and events to learn how to incorporate the performing arts into the classroom and the school experience to enhance the students? learning process. These teachers come from all disciplines including math, history and science. Hospice Care through Theater ? Metropolis works with terminally ill patients to provide interactive music workshops throughout Chicagoland which focus on stimulating memory, gross motor skills, relationship building, continued linguistic usage and social interaction.
