Item Description

Internationally acclaimed sculptor — and UMCS parent! — Juan Santiago's piece, one of only 5 remaining of his original 9 pieces, comprising "Place of Origin"(Memory Container Series) was completed in 2009; after a period of time living and creating art in Southeast Asia for two-and-a-half years.

Artist's Statement:

Years ago, I recall the topic of “memory containers” from past conversations with a fellow undergraduate and good friend of mine, James Mc Leod. James worked with glass and I worked with clay. Both our mediums carried the rich history of vessel making, which we were technically well versed. Conceptually, we thought and discussed the term “form and function” within the context of sculpture. The question was: What else other than matter can “the vessel” contain? As a response, James and I developed several drawings, paintings, as well as sculptural objects in different mediums including glass and ceramics.  In time, our explorations helped expand and enrich our understanding of our creative selves in a way that grounded our own individual stance in glass art and ceramic art.

I remember having said: “my work from now on will not be signatorial (in my own words)” meaning: my name as an artist will never be associated with one style of work. This was merely a personal realization of mine and not “a discovery” for I also idolized the brilliance of other great artists that were simply too prolific in their own practice. Teaching moments for ourselves while we were in school became inspiring moments we would never forget.

Since then, “Memory Containers” became appropriate titles and subtitles given to some of my work today. Five ceramic box constructions are all that is left out of nine of its kind.

“Place of Origin” eventually gave way to a new series of modular boxes that illustrates “shifting perspectives” from different points of view.
